Awhile back a client of mine wanted me to design a brochure and, like most clients, wanted to know what it would cost. Their litmus test for determining the value of that marketing collateral was the size of the piece of paper on which it was to be printed: an 8.5” x 11” sheet of paper shouldn’t cost that much, right? But is that a good indicator of the value of design? What does a business hope to gain from that brochure — or that business card, trade show display, website, etc.? In this month’s blog post I talk about my Top 3 Benefits of Good Design.

1. Increased Brand Awareness

Good design gets you noticed. It not only makes customers aware of your brand, it encourages them to engage with it. The more engaged they are, the more receptive they are to your message.

2. Your Customers Become Your Cheerleaders

How many times have you seen a great ad or commercial and told your friends about it? Or visited a website so well-designed you shared it on social media? People love to turn their friends on to cool stuff, and good design makes that happen. It turns your customers into ambassadors for your brand.

3. Increased ROI

This is what companies really want from design: to boost profits. If good design gets you noticed, engages your customers, and gets them talking about you, chances are your sales will go up. A recent study — called the Design Value Index — by Motiv Strategies and the Design Management Institute found that design-centric companies outperformed S&P 500 companies by 211% over a ten year period. The lesson is clear: good design is good for business.

What do you think is the value of design? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Let’s chat about your next project and how I can help you reap the benefits of good design.
